On the 25th Anniversary of Brain Injury

It’s hard to believe that when I sat down in a restaurant 25 years ago my life would be so altered. When a 200 pound glass partition falls onto your head everything changes. Shattered to the core, my life became “altar-ed,” as God led me on a healing journey. For 17 years I relied on opiates, a cane, and sometimes a wheelchair to get around. Now I walk freely. At the deepest part of who I am, the Holy Spirit worked within me, leading me to wholeness. It has been a long and winding path. Stepping stones of truth have led me to change my life and discover healing along the way.

25 Things 25 Years of Brain Injury has Taught Me

    1. I am so glad to be alive.
    2. The Holy Spirit speaks for me when I do not know.
    3. My body holds onto memory that my mind cannot access.
    4. Jesus is someone who doesn’t flee from my suffering.
    5. Being a mom is a fountain of ever-flowing love.
    6. I married the right man. He’s in it for the long haul, even through despair and disability.
    7. Church at its best is an oasis of love and care.
    8. Shamanic healing practices are similar to visions in the Bible.
    9. I need to ask for support — from others and God.
    10. Friendship is a treasure.
    11. To empty myself and “let it be” is hard work and worthwhile.
    12. The colors of the sunrise and sunset give me a joyful energy rush.
    13. Healing work is very much like cleaning house on the inside of me.
    14. A wheelchair is a tool of strength and independence for someone who needs it.
    15. It takes me five years to adjust to a new phase of being, so why am I in such a rush?
    16. To approach each day as a mystic is far more effective than trying to manage on my own.
    17. I can step out of stress by resting on the life-giving flow of breath.
    18. God who created the world still creates anew.
    19. A heart of praise brightens my day.
    20. Spiritual boundaries are absolutely necessary to treat chronic pain.
    21. Chronic pain repels lots of people on subconscious and energetic levels, so I no longer blame them for distancing from me.
    22. Medicine is valuable, but is not the ultimate authority on healing.
    23. Ghosts and attached spirits are real. So is the Holy Ghost and angels.
    24. Evil is as real as shit and must be dealt with to be healthy.
    25. Suffering must be expressed to heal.
